Spice Cake

 

Spice Cake Ingredients:

1¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1
½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon cloves
¾ cup milk
cup shortening
1 egg

 

Browned Butter Icing Ingredients:

¼ cup butter
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Pinch of salt
1
½ cups sifted confectioners' sugar
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup milk

Spice Cake:

  1. Grease and flour 8x8x2 inch baking pan. 

  2. Measure all ingredients in large mixing bowl; blend for 1/2 minute on low speed, scraping bowl occasionally.

  3. Pour into pan.

  4. Bake for 35-40 minutes until done. 

  5. Cool. 

  6. Frost with Browned Butter Icing.

Browned Butter Icing:

  1. Heat butter in saucepan over medium heat. 

  2. Heat until delicately brown. 

  3. Remove from heat and blend in flour and salt. 

  4. Slowly stir in milk. 

  5. Return to moderate heat and cook until boiling, stirring constantly. 

  6. Boil for one minute. 

  7. Remove from heat and stir in icing sugar and vanilla extract. 

  8. Stir rapidly until thick enough to spread over cold marshmallow layer.
