Spice Cake Ingredients:
1¼ cups all-purpose
flour
1 cup sugar
1½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon cloves
¾ cup milk
⅓
cup shortening
1 egg
Browned Butter Icing
Ingredients:
¼ cup butter
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Pinch of salt
1½ cups sifted confectioners' sugar
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup milk |
Spice Cake:

Grease and flour 8x8x2 inch baking pan.

Measure all ingredients in
large mixing bowl; blend for 1/2 minute on low speed, scraping bowl
occasionally.

Pour into pan.

Bake for 35-40 minutes until done.

Cool.

Frost with Browned
Butter Icing.
Browned Butter Icing:

Heat butter in saucepan over medium heat.

Heat until delicately
brown.
-
Remove from heat and blend in flour and salt.

Slowly
stir in milk.
-
Return to moderate heat and cook until boiling,
stirring constantly.

Boil for one minute.
-
Remove from heat
and stir in icing sugar and vanilla extract.

Stir rapidly until
thick enough to spread over cold marshmallow layer.
